Ligeti at his desk (Photo: Jürgen Röhrscheid)Curiosity was one of the driving forces behind the creative output of the great Hungarian composer György Ligeti (1923–2006): “It is necessary to explore connections that others have not yet recognised, to outline structures that have not so far existed.” Ligeti’s piano music bears impressive witness to this tireless urge to depart from the well-trodden path and to dare to advance into unfamiliar territory.
On the following pages you can interactively explore the colourful cosmos of Ligeti’s piano music. This website created by the Ruhr Piano Festival is an ongoing project. New material – interactive scores of further piano works, education materials, biographical and historical details – will be added in the coming months.

Education projects
In projects organised around the theme of “A Year with György Ligeti”, about 400 children, teenagers and young adults engaged with the music and ideas of the Hungarian composer. The texts and films that emerged from these education projects show how young people with and without previous knowledge of the composer can be introduced to Ligeti’s multifaceted music.
