In 2014, the education activities of the Ruhr Piano Festival were organised around a single theme. In keeping with Pierre-Laurent Aimard’s focus on Ligeti, about 400 children, teenagers and young adults engaged with György Ligeti and his music from different perspectives. The participants included primary school pupils, special needs children, secondary school pupils and students, as well as young pianists and dancers.
Project 1: Ligeti in Duisburg
For many years, the Ruhr Piano Festival has collaborated intensively with schools in Duisburg-Marxloh, a socially deprived area in the north of Duisburg. In the 2013/2014 school year, around 200 primary school pupils, special needs children and secondary school pupils found their own creative ways to access Ligeti’s complex piano music.

Project 2: Études – a project for students
In a third-level project, students and young professionals came together to develop studies for dancers, instrumentalists and live electronics in an interdisciplinary dialogue. Their creative activities took György Ligeti’s multifaceted music and thought as a starting point.
